Yesterday we were contacted by the Twitter API team and informed that WordTwit Pro‘s use of the API was not inline with the Twitter’s terms of service for third-party applications. The reasons given by the Twitter API team were:

“[WordTwit Pro] facilitates serial posting across multiple accounts, tweet/retweet automation, tweet branding and automated affiliate advertising.”

After reviewing the alleged violations by the Twitter API team, we are of the opinion that the reasons given are not justified based on the typical use cases of WordTwit Pro users.

First, WordTwit Pro does allow a user to push a tweet out to multiple accounts simultaneously. This feature is meant to simplify management of a website where new post information would routinely by posted to multiple accounts. For example, a WPtouch-related post on BraveNewCode could be pushed to the @wptouch and @bravenewcode Twitter accounts. This functionality is by no means specific to WordTwit Pro; it exists in almost all Twitter clients available today.

Second, while WordTwit Pro does allow a user to automate certain tweets or retweets, all of these essentially have to come at the request of the end-user. This represents a form of tweet scheduling, which is also a standard feature in many Twitter services and clients.

With regards to tweet branding and affiliate advertising, we are ultimately at a loss. Other than the WordTwit Pro application registered with Twitter (which ultimately causes each tweet to be associated with WordTwit Pro), there is no branding on tweets done by BraveNewCode or WordTwit Pro. Each user has the ability to manually edit a tweet before it goes out, which is no different than most Twitter clients. We also provide a very detailed Tweet Log in WordTwit Pro, which shows every tweet that is generated by WordTwit Pro, even if they were not successfully tweeted.

Ultimately Twitter has suspended the OAuth token currently used by WordTwit Pro, which has caused WordTwit Pro installations using the default configuration to stop working. We have tried to communicate with the Twitter API team to work towards resolving the misunderstanding, but as of right now the token is suspended and they have not responded to our most recent attempts to open a dialog or to educate them further about our product.

To simplify the process of setting up WordTwit Pro, we included a generic WordTwit Pro OAuth token registered with Twitter. Since we do not know the nature of the original complaint with Twitter, we can only assume a person or company witnessed some form of SPAM associated with an installation of WordTwit Pro and reported the application in violation. Since we do not control any portion of a WordTwit Pro installation or any tweets that are generated once a user installs the software, we are unable to intervene when any users potentially abuse the product.

Going forward we are forced to remove the default token within WordTwit Pro; this means all end-users will have to register a custom application with Twitter to use with their installation. That also means each user will be responsible for abiding by Twitter’s terms of service for use of the Twitter API. Since the feature to add a custom OAuth application already exists within WordTwit Pro, current installations already using this feature are not affected by the revoked token.

If you have been affected by this, please visit this page for information on how to create a custom application with Twitter and configure WordTwit Pro to use it.

We will release version 3.3 of WordTwit Pro shortly, which will require custom applications for new installations. If you have been using the custom application feature already and you upgrade, your installation should not be affected by this change.

We apologize to anyone who has been affected by this incident, but as the token was revoked by Twitter without any prior warning, we were not able to resolve any concerns without the downtime experienced by customers.

It’s been a couple months since the last release of WPtouch Pro, but that’s not because we weren’t hard at work on it! We decided to focus our efforts with fixes, additions and changes into a major point release, so 2.4 bakes in a huge list of updates.

Retina Startup + Landscape Startup on iPad

Default Startup Screen in WPtouch Pro 2.4

We’ve long wanted to support retina startup screens for Web-App Mode on iOS for the iPhone 4 (and now iPhone 4S). We’ve been waiting on Apple to implement this feature, and with iOS 5 they finally have. So 2.4 supports adding a retina version of your startup screen image if you’d like to use one.

Additionally, it’s now possible with iOS 5 to add a Landscape version of the startup image for iPad. effectively now you can offer startup screens in your WPtouch Pro Web-App in exactly the same way that native apps can.

FitVid.js

In WPtouch Pro 2.4 we’ve added the fitvids.js jQuery plugin, which takes your object, embed, iframe and html5 videos in posts and pages and automatically scales them based on orientation, and screen size. In WPtouch Pro 2.4 your videos will always look great.

Aloha! iOS 5 Native Scrolling

As if the above wasn’t enough, we’ve also added iOS 5 native scrolling for Web-App Mode on mobile, and replaced the javascript scrolling we used on iPad with iOS 5 native scrolling.

iOS 5 on iPhone & iPod touch

Now in Web-App mode the header remains fixed like native apps, while the body content scrolls in native speed and momentum.

iOS 5 on iPad

The result is a smooth scrolling experience, coupled with access to features in mobileSafari which were previously impossible on iPad like text selection. For previous iOS versions on iPad, the scrolling method will gracefully degrade.

♥ Android

Along with several styling and appearance improvements for Android devices, we’ve also added support for ontouchstart and ontouchend to Android. This speeds up interacting with the UI and makes for a more native experience.

The Whole Story

For a complete list of changes for 2.4 you can visit the support posting about the new release (you need to be logged in with a pro account), or view the change log in the read me accompanying the update.

WordPress, Meet Twitter

Today we’re excited to reveal what we’ve been working on for the past few months: WordTwit Pro, our premium version of WordTwit, the best WordPress to Twitter publishing plugin.

In WordTwit Pro you have complete publishing control over the tweets you send out using its sleek new publishing widget. Set schedule, repeat & delay options for a new status update; select and publish to multiple Twitter accounts; Authorize those account for shared use among other WordPress authors on your site; easily add custom hashtags and more— all on-the-fly in a few clicks with the new WordTwit Pro publishing widget.

Multiple Accounts

Multiple Account Bliss

In WordTwit Pro you can easily setup multiple Twitter accounts for publishing. And it’s easy to decide which accounts WordTwit Pro will publish to, on a completely per-post basis.

WordTwit Pro also supports setting accounts as shared or private— perfect for multi-author websites to control the publishing options available for each contributor, author or editor.

And you can even authorize other authors to add their own Twitter accounts securely.

Tweet Scheduling

Scheduling Galore

As with the free version, WordTwit Pro can immediately publish a tweet about your new post to Twitter. Now with WordTwit Pro we’ve added easy to use scheduling, which allows for multiple tweets to be published to Twitter separated by the time you specify, on a per-post basis.

For example, you can now:

Delay the first tweet from publishing right away for a certain amount of time

Specify that a tweet be published multiple times, at the interval you choose

And do both!

Custom #Hashtags

Hashtag Support

We’ve also added another often-requested feature, but went over-the-top in our implementation: totally custom hashtag support.

Instead of just accessing WordPress’ categories or tags to use as hashtags, we’ve built our own hash-tagging system which allows you to quickly and easily add hashtags to your tweets.

It also smart— the new publishing widget provides you with a list of your popular/recently used hashtags and in a few clicks you can add the ones you want to a tweet.

So whether you’re adding a hashtag that’s totally new or those you use often— it’s a breeze to add hashtags to your WordTwit Pro tweets.

Click To Edit

We’ve also added a new Manual Mode for the publishing widget. Simply click to edit-in-place your tweet’s text, title, tags and link. It’s 100% control over the tweets you’ll send out if you need it.

Per Post/Page

It’s also one click easy to decide whether a new post you’re publishing will have a Twitter update published with it. No more excluding by category— just simply flip the widget off with its publish toggle… that’s it.

Tweet Log

Tweet Log

With the new Tweet Log you can see past tweets, upcoming tweets, and any errors that occurred, and what the error message was from Twitter.

Manage, control and delete right from the Tweet Log— you now have more control after you click the ‘Publish’ button.

Admin Panel

Awesome Admin Panel

To top it all off, WordTwit Pro features the same intuitive, easy-to-use admin panel that we designed for our WPtouch Pro and Piggy plugins.

WPtouch Pro 2.2 Now Available

We’re always looking at ways we can improve, optimize and streamline our work, especially for our mobile plugins WPtouch, WPtouch Pro and Piggy. On mobile, every split second counts, and we work hard to improve the speed of our products while maintaining ease of use and clean under-the-hood code.

In the WPtouch Pro 2.2 update (now available) we’ve packed more improvements, fixes, tweaks & refinements than ever before in anything we’ve done. After a solid four weeks of work, every corner of our premium mobile plugin offering was given a good wash and made even better for our customers.

WPtouch Pro 2.2 is a free update for all existing customers.

Highlights

2.2 Web-App Mode Notice Bubble

With WPtouch Pro we revolutionized mobile WordPress plugins bringing our one-of-a-kind Web-App Mode feature to WordPress self-hosted sites everywhere.

With Web-App Mode you can effortlessly offer a fullscreen web application version of you website for visitors on iOS devices, out-of-the-box.

In WPtouch Pro 2.2, the technology unpinning Web-App Mode has been re-written for even better performance and reliability, on both mobile and iPad.

We’ve also improved compatibility with other WordPress plugins that require AJAX like Google Translate. For these plugins, a single click disables WPtouch Pro’s AJAX in web-app mode to ensure compatibility. WPtouch Pro then intelligently uses a new method for loading your site pages without AJAX, all while maintaining a smooth, fast mobile web application experience.

Squish!

We also took the time needed to eliminate a variety of smaller issues that crept up after the 2.1 release. In total, we’ve fixed dozens of issues found by team staff and customers, totalling 300 new code changes.

Swoosh!

Despite WPtouch Pro being a much larger plugin than its free companion, it still loads faster on mobile devices than WPtouch 1.9.x. That said, there’s lot of new features, settings and options, so when loading the WPtouch Pro admin on some servers it resulted in less optimal performance.

So we wanted to do better. We’ve re-factored code and reduced memory usage. We also made a variety of changes to many smaller aspects of the way our revolutionary admin panel works to slim and shave load times and improve usability.

Our admin panel is truly awesome, offering all settings for WPtouch Pro in one place— all in a clean, easy to use layout.

2.2— optimized JavaScript

On the theme side WPtouch on mobile and iPad runs smoother than ever, up to 1.5x times faster* with its re-factored code. For example the 2.1.5 theme.js file for mobile was over 900 lines. In 2.2, it’s 453, and does even more!

What’s Next

With these major improvements completed, the focus for WPtouch Pro turns back to themes, so look for new theme additions in the coming releases ahead.

*Based on tests conducted on BraveNewCode.com running WPtouch Pro 2.2

We just pushed out an update to WordTwit, version 2.6. The following changes/fixes have been incorporated into the release:

Added: Simple character count to post WordTwit status box

Added: Tweet error messages

Added: Ability to automatically adjust OAuth time offset

Added: Ability to utilize a custom Twitter application for Tweets

Fixed: Bug with apostrophes in category name

Changed: Stopped a CSS file from loading which isn’t used anymore

Changed: Logic regarding old Tweet times

Updated: Language .pot file. Please submit translations to translation (at) bravenewcode.com

One of the most exciting updates is the ability to configure WordTwit to use a custom Twitter application. So instead of having WordTwit Tweet on behalf of “WordTwit”, you can make it Tweet on behalf of your own website, for example “BraveNewCode”.

As you can see in the example on the right, the Tweet was on behalf of the custom application called BraveNewCode. So website owners are now free to create their own applications to enhance their personal or site branding with WordTwit.

Creating Your Own Application in Twitter

To create your own application, you can visit the WordTwit developer site at dev.twitter.com/apps. Once on the site, click the “Register a new app” button in the sidebar.

You’ll then be able to configure all aspects of your application:

The only real “gotchas” are that you must make sure the application is a Browser application and not a Client application. To do that, you must define callback URL, even though WordTwit will override it – simply specify your main website URL here. You must also make sure the application has Read & Write access as opposed to Read-only.

Once that’s done, you should be able to find the application’s OAuth Consumer key and Consumer secret tokens, similar to these:

It’s important to keep these two parameters secret, since someone who obtains them could Tweet on behalf of your application. But in the odd event that they are ever compromised, you can simply regenerate them via the Twitter developer site (we regenerated the ones shown in the example, so the tokens shown above no longer work).

Once that’s done, simply input the two tokens into the WordTwit administration panel and reauthorize WordTwit. If all went well, you should see an authorization dialog for your custom application similar to the one shown here. Then you simply have to grant access for WordTwit to Tweet on behalf of your custom application, and you’re good to go.

This will most likely be the last major update for WordTwit until we release our long awaited WordTwit Pro plugin which we’ve been working on in conjunction with WPtouch Pro 2.2. If you’re interested in being notified when WordTwit Pro is released, please sign up for updates.

We’ve also included an updated POT language file in WordTwit 2.6 – if you’re interested in translating it, please send us the completed translation via our contact form or via the email address included in the readme.txt file in the plugin.

If anyone has any issues with the release, please let us know via the forums or here.

Enjoy WordTwit 2.6!

Since WordPress 3.1 was released reports started trickling in of a few things that appeared broken in WPtouch 1.9.x. Because we had a few releases scheduled for around the same time 3.1 was released it was difficult at first to determine the reasons for the bugs, whether they were indeed just WPtouch, or 3.1′s doing.

As it turns out, it’s a bit of both.

There’s a post here describing the nature of the category exclusion bug plaguing queries in 3.1. This has been fixed and in the next release the fix will solve problems for those who have not been up to date on WPtouch’s releases (currently 1.9.24 as of this post).

Though there’s a genuine bug in 3.1 and category exclusion, the method we were using to exclude categories in WPtouch was a little antiquated and backwards.

We’ve since cleaned things up and are using much better (and still backwards compatible) code to exclude categories, and while we did that we also added a few more aspects to the exclusion routine that improve and extend it.

Now, category exclusion will truly exclude that category everywhere. Searches, archive results, and of course the category drop-down list all respect the excluded categories defined in WPtouch.

Exclude by Tag

In the process, we’ve added the same control and power to exclude by tag, and you can even combine the two and WPouch will take care of it, without affecting whatever you’re doing on your desktop theme.

Other Bugs

We also cleaned up some more code and went through debug logs to make sure WPtouch runs error, warning, and php notice free on your server.

Coming Up

The next release (1.9.25) will be available soon and lays the troubles to rest, along with adding new filters to make sure WPtouch doesn’t load on the Samsung Galaxy Tab or Motorola Xoom tablets.

Before the event your site will show a thin banner which counts down to the event, shows how many other sites are using the plugin, and also links to the official Earth Hour website.

During the event, your website shows a “blackout” screen, with an earth hour logo (or you can display your own) and your own personalized message and earth hour image letting visitors know your website is participating in the event.

Native layout, effects & animations together with a familiar look and feel on iPad ensure visitors to your website instantly know how to navigate and access content and participate in discussions.

Tap, Touch & Slide

The first thing you’ll notice when using WPtouch on iPad is the incredible responsiveness, speed and native feel. It really does make your website feel like a native application on iPad. And because it does all this visitors feel instantly familiar, comfortable and pleased to browse and enjoy your website.

A Focus On What’s Important

We’ve looked at the things people want most out of an iPad browsing experience with a WordPress website, and worked for months to do our best and deliver them all:

Fast webpage load times

Browse and navigate things like blog content, pages, and menus quickly and easily

Have access to Search, Contact and Message features in convenient ways

Save and share content on popular social networking services

Be able to comment and reply quickly and easily in website discussions

Website Owners

And we’ve also looked at what website owners & administrators want and need out of iPad support.

Because WPtouch Pro on iPad works with the WPtouch Pro you know and love, it saves considerable time and worry in setting up and administrating its presentation.

With WPtouch Pro 2.1, you can serve a rich, powerful smartphone mobile experience plus a fantastic iPad experience at the same time, quickly, easily and efficiently.

Discussion Is A Joy

Comment discussion in WPtouch Pro 2.1 on iPad is simply a joy. It’s incredibly easy for visitors to leave comments and replies to other comments with our fly-in comment form. And since comments are posted and added in real-time, discussion is immediate, fast and simple for visitors.

We Belong Together

WPtouch Pro on iPad works seamlessly with your WPtouch Pro mobile theme. When you configure options for your mobile theme which make sense to share with your iPad theme, WPtouch Pro intelligently serves those same options on iPad.

Settings like: menus, pages, icons, backgrounds, font faces, thumbnails, advertising, Web-App Mode & more are all handled automatically on iPad effortlessly.

What a Good Child Theme!

WPtouch Pro 2.1 also supports child themes out-of-the-box.

It’s easy to customize your WPtouch Pro mobile and iPad experiences even further at the theme level, non-destructively. Whether you’re tweaking things on your site or producing a great experience for clients, WPtouch Pro 2.1 has you covered.

Copying as a child theme is just a click away in the admin panel, and you’re ready to starty customizing the look and feel of WPtouch Pro’s mobile and iPad themes easily.

The “One More Thing”:
Also with Web-App Mode Support

Use the new iPad support in our themes to offer a rich, friendly web experience for your iPad visitors, including harnessing our unique Web-App Mode feature which allows visitors to save your site to their iPad home screen and launch it in full-screen application mode, without mobile Safari.

And just like WPtouch Pro’s Web-App Mode on iPhone and iPod touch, you can choose a custom loading image in full 1024×768, set the status bar color and enable things like multitasking persistence (WPtouch Pro remembers what the visitor last viewed on your site).

Available Now

WPtouch Pro 2.1 is available now, and is acfree update for all existing customers.

What’s New

Along with bug fixes and admin enhancements, 2.1 brings 3 major additions: Child Theme Support, Custom Menus, and the long awaited addition of iPad support.

Video Overview

Click here to view the embedded video.

Purpose Of The Beta

This beta release is only for evaluation and interest in improving WPtouch Pro by helping us resolve issues.

We know that many of you want to try out iPad support, so we’re pleased to make this beta available for testing.

Tap, Touch & Slide

The first thing you’ll notice when using WPtouch on iPad is the incredible responsiveness, speed and native feel. It really does make your website feel like a native application on iPad. And because it does all this, visitors feel instantly familiar, comfortable, and happy to browse and enjoy the website content you present to them.

A Focus On What’s Important

We’ve looked at the things people want most out of an iPad browsing experience with a WordPress website, and delivered
them all:

Installation & Details

Existing customers of WPtouch Pro should download and install the beta separately from their existing installations.

Because of the nature of beta software, aspects of the code are subject to change. As a result theme development is not recommended nor supported.

A new beta support forum & thread have been added in which you can post questions and let us know about any issues you might have.

We hope you enjoy the beta!

Updated: The beta registration is now closed.

After months of hard work WPtouch 2.0 Pro is ready for some beta testing love. We’re looking for a small group of dedicated testers to help make it as solid, safe and snappy as possible. If you’re interested in joining the beta program please read below on what we’re looking for before deciding to dive in.

General Information About The Beta Program

The WPtouch 2.0 Pro beta program is for the paid version of WPtouch. Beta testers participating in the program will receive a copy of the WPtouch 2.0 beta, and gain access to a private beta forum on our Support Forums to log issues and discuss the release.

Once installed, new versions of the beta will be released through the admin panel in WordPress. When the official 2.0 release is available, testers can upgrade to it through the admin from the beta as well.

Beta testers should be aware that WPtouch 2.0 Beta 1 is incomplete. We will issue updates to the beta over the coming weeks to improve stability and complete features, and we’ll ask for new rounds of review with a list of changes for testing.

As with any beta release, we expect to see bugs and issues which (though unlikely) may affect the stability of your WordPress environment. It is not recommended to join the beta program unless you are comfortable with beta releases and feel capable of restoring software and databases associated with your WordPress setup. That said, we don’t anticipate any serious issues or concerns with the betas.

Areas Of Focus

We ask that if you are interested in a beta of WPtouch Pro that you fall into at least 1 of 3 categories:

You’re interested because of the many new features, and want to try and help improve the new theme(s) it offers

You’re interested in designing/developing a custom theme with the new Skeleton

You’re damn good at finding bugs and testing software, and think you can help us with your awesome bug squishing abilities

Requirements

To join the WPtouch 2.0 Pro beta program, we require the following:

You have or create a BNCID* (to assign the license and forum access)

You have a WordPress.org self-hosted website running WordPress 2.9.x

The necessary admin credentials to upload and activate plugins on your WordPress installation

That’s it!

*You can register for a BNCID by clicking the ‘Register’ link in the header of this website.

For beta 1 we will only be testing on 2.9.x. WPtouch 2.0 Pro will support WordPress 2.8, 2.9, and 3.0 officially, but our focus for beta 1 is on current versions of WordPress.

The purpose of the beta program is to harden and shore-up any issues related to the working functionality of the software, so we’d kindly ask that you do not publish reviews of the WPtouch 2.0 betas as product reviews at this time.

We’d also ask that you resign yourself to being a top-secret spy and not spreading information and details about the plugin before we do, if at all possible. We’re not crazy like Apple but do appreciate solidarity!

Enough Already! Gimme A Copy!

Hold your horses! First thing’s first: there are a limited number of spaces in the beta program.

We’ll contact those who want to join on a first-come, first-serve basis. We’ll send out a welcome mail and fill you in on the details if you’re in the group. If not, don’t worry: WPtouch 2.0 Pro will be released in June, and that’s not far off!

Register for the WPtouch 2.0 Beta

Updated: The beta registration is now closed.

UPDATED: WPtouch 1.9.9 introduced a bug which has been fixed in WPtouch 1.9.9.3. Please upgrade ASAP if you’re experiencing the issue.

Today we’re releasing an update to WPtouch to address a few issues which have been reported in the last while, and also add and revise a few existing features.

Tricky Fixes

Of note in terms of bug fixes are a fix for the admin page failing to load on some hosting setups, and a fix for some mobile browsers that have issues with
return false;
.

Fresh Features

In the what’s new category there’s been improvements to the comments via ajax and for iPhone/iPod touch visitors leaving comments they’ll now see the unique keyboards built into the iPhone for entering urls and e-mail addressses.

We were working on client-side text-size changing, but that’s not quite prime time so it hasn’t been included in this update.

Below you’ll find the complete list of changes.

Changelog

Added HTML5 types for comment url and email (devices capable now show unique keyboard layouts for these inputs)

Added and refined jQuery code, effects

Revised post/page image sizing auto-detection features

Changed the way Ajax comments work – will now work for everyone

Changed code referencing javascript:return false; to javascript:void(0);

Changed admin panel to stop using Ajax that would sometimes fail to load

Removed comments-ajax.php from theme (not needed anymore)

Removed ajax comments option from the admin (not needed anymore)

Removed obsolete code orphans from old code methods

Bug fixes

The update notification should appear in your WordPress admin shortly.
