What Is WPtouch?
More than just a plugin, WPtouchTM is a mobile theme for your WordPress website. Modelled after Apple’s app store design specs, WPtouch loads lightning fast and shows your content beautifully, without interfering with your regular site theme.
WPtouch automatically transforms your WordPress blog into a web-application experience when viewed from an iPhoneTM, iPod touchTM, AndroidTM, or BlackBerry StormTM touch mobile device.
How Does It Work?
It detects the user agents of these devices and serves up its custom theme to those visitors only. You can add additional user agents if you choose in the admin panel.
I thought the iPhone/iPod touch/Android shows my
website just fine the way it is now?
Not all websites are created equal, with some sites failing to translate well in the viewport of a small mobile device. Sidebars, smaller text, and certain types of content won’t render or do so poorly.
Many WordPress sites today make heavy use of javascript files, image-heavy sidebars and so forth, which increase page load times, driving your visitors on 3G/EDGE batty.
So that’s why a solution like WPtouch makes sense— a lightweight, fast-loading, feature-rich and highly-customized “theme application” to deliver your content.
Trimmed Down, But With All The Trimmings
Though extremely lightweight & optimized for mobile devices, WPtouch still comes complete with all the standard WordPress website features: search, login, categories, tags, archives, photos, thumbnails & more. WPtouch also offers many additional customization features through a beautifully designed WordPress admin panel.
How Do I Set It Up?
WPtouch can be easily installed through your self-hosted WordPress admin, or easily uploaded to your server. Check out the Gallery tab to preview the appearance of both a WPtouch-enabled website and the admin interface, or visit the Installation tab for details on getting WPtouch installed, activated and configured on your website.

Introduction
Though technically a plugin, WPtouch is a theme when it’s activated on your WordPress website. We chose to have WPtouch as a plugin because it offers us (and you!) far more flexibility in terms of options and features.
Browse below to find out more about installing and using WPtouch.
Getting Started
Before you begin make sure you have a current backup of your WordPress installation and your database. If you’re new to a WordPress backup, you can read this step-by-step guide from WordPress.org. It’s highly unlikely anything will go wrong, but you can always be sure that it won’t matter by backing up… right?
You should also make sure that your WordPress/MU installation is up to date, and that you’re not having any other issues prior to installing/upgrading WPtouch. This will help you identify and solve any issues post-install.
Upgrading
WordPress Admin Method:
To upgrade from within WordPress (2.7 or higher) simply click on the “upgrade automatically” link on the WordPress plugin admin page (wp-admin/plugins). The new update will be downloaded and installed automatically for you. Your admin configuration settings will remain unchanged.
Please check the Changelog for any new features which may have added settings in the admin panel which you might need to set or configure in order to use.
Zip File Upload Method:
If you’re upgrading from a previous version, you can upload the latest version and your settings and icons will remain the same. You can upload and install a .zip file in WordPress easily.
Installing For The First Time
If you’re installing WPtouch for the first time, there are two ways to go about it, which method you choose depends on whether you have access to automatically upgrade a plugin or not.
Search and Install Method
As of WordPress 2.7 plugins can now be installed directly from the admin, without having to be uploaded manually to an FTP server. To install a plugin for the first time in the WordPress admin is also very easy and straightforward.
To begin click on the ‘Add New’ link under the Plugins heading in your WordPress administration panel menu.
On the Add New page you’ll see an input field. Simply enter ‘WPtouch’ into the field, and click the the ‘Search Plugins’ button beside it.
Next you’ll see the Search Results Page. The first result should be WPtouch. Click on the ‘Install’ link on the far right side of the description of WPtouch, and an overlay will appear.
The overlay provides more detail about the plugin, including some of the information which we also provide here on the website such as the Changelog. Click the Install Now button to begin the installation download. WordPress will automatically download the plugin .zip file, and WPtouch will be installed in your plugins directory automatically.
.Zip Upload Method
First make sure you’ve downloaded the latest version of WPtouch from our website, and know where you’ve saved it on your computer. Next click on the Add New link under the Plugins heading in your WordPress administration panel menu. You can upload and install a .zip file in WordPress easily by choosing the Upload link from the Add New page’s top menu. Next, select the button to upload a .zip file, and choose the location of the WPtouch .zip file on your computer. WPtouch will be uploaded and installed in your plugins directory automatically.
Activation
WPtouch will work ‘out-of-the-box’ once being activated, without any additional configuration, using its default settings.
There are however many configurable options available in the WPtouch admin panel, located in the Settings->WPtouch page.
WPtouch Admin Panel
The WPtouch admin panel is laid out in vertical blocks which break down the plugins configurable options into sections. This is true of all BraveNewCode plugins.
Each section contains options related to different types of functionality, i.e. Style & Color, Pages & Logo Icons etc. Explore the panels and options to determine which settings apply to your installation preferences.
Visit the Gallery page for screenshots of the admin panel in action.
Accessing More Info
We’ve labelled most settings so that they are self-explanatory, but where a setting might offer additional info you’ll see a red question mark (?). Clicking on the question mark opens a window which explains the feature in greater detail.
Saving and Reset
At the bottom of the admin panel you’ll see two buttons, one for saving settings and one for resetting them. The Save Settings button when pressed will save the current configuration options to your database, and the settings will persist even if you disable the plugin and re-activate it, or upgrade it.
The Reset Settings button will restore the default configuration of the plugin. This can be helpful in troubleshooting or if you wish to start over is setting up the plugin.
Visit the Support page for additional help and information regarding setup and installation.

Common Issues
Stylesheet Missing Error
Despite providing a mobile theme, WPtouch is a WordPress plugin, not a theme.
If you’re receiving a ‘Stylesheet Missing Error’ after installing WPtouch, you’ve likely installed it as a theme in wp-content/themes as opposed to wp-content/plugins.
Missing Footer Switch Link
If you click the mobile theme switch link in the footer of WPtouch and see your desktop theme without the same switch link at the bottom of the page, chances are that your desktop theme is missing a piece of WordPress code common (and usually used) by plugins to add things to the footer space in a website.
Simply add <?php wp_footer(); ?> just above </body> and </html> in your desktop theme’s footer.php file.
Seeing or Not Seeing WPtouch Infrequently
A hard issue to describe, but the issue usually presents itself as being able to see the WPtouch theme active on your website for some pages but not others. This is usually caused by not configuring your cache plugin to reject mobile user agents or to skip trying to cache mobile visits.
Check out our short video screencast tutorial on configuring the popular WP Super Cache plugin to work properly with WPtouch.
