Today we’re proud to announce the immediate availability of the major upgrade to WPtouch, WPtouch 2.0 Pro. WIth over 100 new features, a brand new admin panel and more themes available soon, WPtouch Pro is the best rich-mobile theme solution for WordPress websites.
Competitively priced at an incredible value, WPtouch Pro represents intense dedication over the past 3+ months between Duane Storey and Dale Mugford, co-founders of BraveNewCode.
60,000 lines of code with blood, sweat and love were poured into every aspect of the plugin, making it one of the most comprehensive, powerful, modular and easy-to-use WordPress plugins ever made.
Highlights
With more power and customization than ever before, WPtouch 2.0 Pro provides WordPress website owners a flexible mobile theming tool, while offering visitors a rich, fast and polished mobile web experience.
Web-App Mode
Offer your iPhone and iPod touch users a full-screen, AJAX-powered experience when they bookmark your site to their home screens. A first for WordPress mobile themes, WPtouch 2.0′s Web-App Mode automatically converts all local website links to load inside its fullscreen view, without any additional setup or configuration!
And just like native apps on iPhone and iPod touch, you can create and apply your own branded loading screen image that will display while your site fires up in Web-App Mode… sexy!
You can try out Web-App Mode right here on BraveNewCode.com.
Internationalized
WPtouch Pro comes ready with translations into Italian, German, French, Japanese and Spanish, and new languages like Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian and more will be added over upcoming release updates.
Discussion On The Go
In WPtouch 2.0, the full WordPress commenting system is supported. Paginated comments, inline replies and threading all work simply and beautifully. Your desktop theme comment settings are automatically transformed within WPtouch, with no extra setup required.
Coming soon: Intense Debate and Disqus commenting plugin systems will be supported, too, offering more native commenting WordPress power in a mobile experience than anywhere else.
Now Playing: Your Own Mobile Theme
WPtouch 2.0 offers some great theme experiences out-of-the-box, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Our Development Guru Duane Storey has painstakingly planned out a mobile theming framework underneath that provides flexible, time-saving power for theme creators looking to take WPtouch Pro to the next level.
Leverage the included Skeleton template to customize your theme, or of you’re a developer customer build one from scratch, harnessing the Developer Docs available to build your masterpiece.
All of BraveNewCode’s own WPtouch 2.0 themes are based on the very same Skeleton template included with every copy of WPtouch Pro.
Powerful Administration
The WPtouch Pro admin panel is as polished and pretty as the themes it drives. We’ve re-designed the plugin’s admin panel and packed a slew of new features into it.
From the drag and drop page/icon management to the easy to use theme browser/manager, to the new WPtouchboard overview, the WPtouch Pro admin panel might just be the best ever created for a WordPress plugin.

Will either the free or Pro version be upgraded to make use of the high res Retina Display on the iPhone 4? I’ve used the free version for a while and really like it, would be tempted in to further customisation with the Pro version but not until I can get nice high res graphics, as the plugin looks a bit naff right now on the iP4 display.
Good work though guys, great plugin!

Hi Richard,
WPtouch Pro has a few resolution improvements already (namely, icons).
We’re in Canada, so once we have the iPhone 4 here and can do device testing we’ll make other improvements.
That said, our customers with iPhone 4 have said that WPtouch Pro looks great as is.

can u publish a blog which has the pro version installed so we can see what is new?
does it support right text direction?
currently it supports only full and left?
another one is … can u select the category to be the default page when its open and assign icons to teh categorys?

It’s great when 1.9 breaks a WP 3.0 install when it demands an upgrade. :(
I understand offering new features…and I also understand the desire to eek out a living…but not having the free version you’ve offered for so long to no longer work (meaning: I had to reinstall WP to get my site back) and only offering the “pro” version seems to be a bit of a money-grab to me, no matter how you slice it.

Did you post in our forums about your issue? We would have gladly helped you.
WPtouch 1.9 works fine on 3.0. This is the first report that we’ve heard of where it caused an issue.
Not saying it’s your fault, but that a) we have channels to help our users, both paid and free and b) with thousands of downloads every day, this is the first report of such an issue.
We know it can be frustrating when things like this happen, and we don’t like it when they do. But posting comments like this to vent about a free plugin that’s still in active development and has been tested on 3.0 by thousands of users is a bit harsh.

I can’t wait to upgrade to 2.0 the webapp is my favorite improvement its amazing that it feels like a real iPhone app.
Questions:
1: the icon we upload to be used for the homescreen, if we use one with a better resolution will it appear to take advantage of the bew retina display?
2: most of the links in your menu load directly in the webapp (I didn’t test them all) but an example like the forums link takes you “out of the webapp” so to speak and into safari. I know we are already technically in a safari window. So does this happen when you have an external link or did you specify it somehow?
3: how does the webapp technique work for the android OS? I don’t have one to test but I’m curious as to how it behaves. Does it make it feel like an app on that OS as well?

Hi Thomas,
We have the right code to support the higher resolution of the iPhone 4, but due to a bug in iOS4 web-apps don’t save icons or splash images in high res. It’s likely an oversight by Apple that they’ll fix in an upcoming update.
All external links open in the browser. Most other sites won’t work in web-app mode, because they’re not coded for it.
Currently web-app mode only works on iOS devices. If Android devices or other touch smart phones add support, we’ll definitely include them.

Awesome Dale, thanks for the fast response. 2 more things, I’m assuming when you said it would support admob and others you mean it doesn’t yet and in the future it might support iAds too?
And lastly I assume this would be resolved with the templating, but I’m quite fond of the AP mobile app and the ny times app because they display little thumbnails of the article. Would WPtouch be capable of outputting that type of layout?
Dale Mugford

We support Adsense and Admob out of the box. We will add others, but there’s a long list of to-do’s we want to knock off first.
As far as designs, appearance and templates, there’s lots I personally want to do and see happen. That said, nothing prevents anyone from doing that kind of thing today. One of the great benefits of 2.0 is the ability to create custom themes.

Guys,
Have you seen Padpress?. The reason I’m asking its because I already use the WPtouch free version, and its great. I know you mentioned that WPtouch Pro already supports the iPad, but does it supports in a similar way Padpress does? Do you have a time plan for something like it?
If so I would update to WPtouch 2.0 inmediatly!
Keep the good work!
Cheers.

Sure we’ve seen it. We could have done something like that, throw around some open source iScroll code and call it a day, charge $50.
But we didn’t. iPad support in WPtouch Pro 2.1 will be really good. I think people will like it a lot. And all of it at $29 for a single license.

will 2.1 be a free upgrade from the 2.0 i just purchased? or at least so sort of discount for the added iPad feature?
Dale Mugford
BNC Design Guru
100% free update. We won’t even consider charging again for anything till 3.0, which is a long, long ways away.

Whoo hoo! sorry, i missed the “Upgrades through all 2.x releases!” in the product description. THANKS!

Things look awesome. Sold!
Having iPhone & iPad support in one plugin (ie 1 codebase) is huge. Looking forward to it!

So now that WP 3.0 is out and WPtouch is a little further along, I’m wondering what might be considered the best WP e-commerce solution to use with WPtouch. Would it still be Shopp as mentioned before?
Mobile e-commerce is massive and WPtouch + the RIGHT e-commerce solution means a cheap, effective mobile store!
Let me know your thoughts on what the right solutions is.
Dale Mugford
BNC Design Guru
Well hold your horses. Most of the e-commerce solutions out there are built for desktop sites and experiences. It’s not that easy to create a great mobile store template, as evidenced by the fact that none exist.
We’d love to work on something like that, but there’s still cud to chew, first : )

You should look at nike’s store on the iPhone. It not wordpress or WPtouch but it’s awesome solution to mobile shopping.

This has got to be the coolest looking mobile theme I’ve ever seen. Kudos to you. Will be purchasing in the morning.
One question I do have is regarding other mobile browsers. Can I run a separate plugin for wap based browsers, while running this for iPhone and iPod touch? I need to make a blog accessible from 98% of all devices in the us, and am having some truble doing so. Any recommendations??
Duane Storey
BNC Development Guru
Hi Trevor! Yes, WPtouch is only active for the user agents it supports, so you can couple it with another plugin that supports other user agents. Some people have used the WordPress Mobile Pack I believe for the WAP portion.

Hi, Just a few questions about this awesome app. First, does it do the WordPress as a CMS? I love WP as a CMS for normal websites so does this app work for that as well? Also, I create custom themes using Artisteer, will this be a problem?
Thank you.
Duane Storey
BNC Development Guru
You mean, does it support WordPress 3.0′s new menu system? Not currently, but we’re hoping to have it in for the 2.1 release. But the menu system is already fairly powerful, and provides a few custom items as well to add whatever you desire!

Thanks Duane,
Here is a site I just designed and am still working on. Would this app work for this site? This will give you a better understanding of what my question is.

Thank you,

Other than the animation on the main page, everything else looks pretty standard. Most mobile devices don’t support Flash, so that animation probably wouldn’t work (depending on how you did it). You may have to tinker a bit with the CSS for your contact form, and possibly come up with a mobile specific front page that doesn’t involve that animation, but it should work fine.
Bear in mind that WPtouch is it’s own theme, and doesn’t make use of your desktop theme at all. WPtouch enables it’s own theme for mobile devices, and stands out of the way for non mobile requests, which go directly to your desktop theme.
