It’s Here! WPtouch 2.0 Pro Now Available
Jun 22 2010 • Written By Dale Mugford • 54 Comments

Today we’re proud to announce the immediate availability of the major upgrade to WPtouch, WPtouch 2.0 Pro. WIth over 100 new features, a brand new admin panel and more themes available soon, WPtouch Pro is the best rich-mobile theme solution for WordPress websites.

Competitively priced at an incredible value, WPtouch Pro represents intense dedication over the past 3+ months between Duane Storey and Dale Mugford, co-founders of BraveNewCode.

60,000 lines of code with blood, sweat and love were poured into every aspect of the plugin, making it one of the most comprehensive, powerful, modular and easy-to-use WordPress plugins ever made.

Highlights

With more power and customization than ever before, WPtouch 2.0 Pro provides WordPress website owners a flexible mobile theming tool, while offering visitors a rich, fast and polished mobile web experience.

Web-App Mode

Offer your iPhone and iPod touch users a full-screen, AJAX-powered experience when they bookmark your site to their home screens. A first for WordPress mobile themes, WPtouch 2.0′s Web-App Mode automatically converts all local website links to load inside its fullscreen view, without any additional setup or configuration!

And just like native apps on iPhone and iPod touch, you can create and apply your own branded loading screen image that will display while your site fires up in Web-App Mode… sexy!

You can try out Web-App Mode right here on BraveNewCode.com.

Internationalized

WPtouch Pro comes ready with translations into Italian, German, French, Japanese and Spanish, and new languages like Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian and more will be added over upcoming release updates.

Discussion On The Go

In WPtouch 2.0, the full WordPress commenting system is supported. Paginated comments, inline replies and threading all work simply and beautifully. Your desktop theme comment settings are automatically transformed within WPtouch, with no extra setup required.

Coming soon: Intense Debate and Disqus commenting plugin systems will be supported, too, offering more native commenting WordPress power in a mobile experience than anywhere else.

Now Playing: Your Own Mobile Theme

WPtouch 2.0 offers some great theme experiences out-of-the-box, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Our Development Guru Duane Storey has painstakingly planned out a mobile theming framework underneath that provides flexible, time-saving power for theme creators looking to take WPtouch Pro to the next level.

Leverage the included Skeleton template to customize your theme, or of you’re a developer customer build one from scratch, harnessing the Developer Docs available to build your masterpiece.

All of BraveNewCode’s own WPtouch 2.0 themes are based on the very same Skeleton template included with every copy of WPtouch Pro.

Powerful Administration

The WPtouch Pro admin panel is as polished and pretty as the themes it drives. We’ve re-designed the plugin’s admin panel and packed a slew of new features into it.

From the drag and drop page/icon management to the easy to use theme browser/manager, to the new WPtouchboard overview, the WPtouch Pro admin panel might just be the best ever created for a WordPress plugin.

  1. I don’t get it… what is the difference between this version and the free one?

Well, this post kind of highlights the new changes. Visit the product page for more details, and the pricing grid shows what you get over 1.9.

      • Can you simply create a side by side chart that compares the free version with the paid one? None of what I am seeing appears to be different than the version that you simply install through the wordpress plugins page for free. …unless Im missing something.

I’m not being a smart ass or anything. It’s just that I am a developer and if a client seeks something like this I need to know whether to offer this as an free incentive or a paid add-on.

No problem John. In short, here’s what WPtouch Pro has that 1.9 doesn’t:

          - Works in Web-App Mode -visit BraveNewCode.com (on an iPhone/iPod touch) and bookmark it to your home screen. When you tap the bookmark icon, the site will open in full-screen mode. You can choose a loading image for the site as well. This offers far more branding and a unique experience for visitors.

          - Professionally translated (ships with 6 languages, we’re adding more)

          - All-new admin panel with more configuration options, settings, and an easier menu setup

          - Drop Menu now supports hierarchies, so more complicated site menus can be handled in the drop-down

          - Admob support (and other ad solutions are coming)

          - Ability to copy themes, install new themes (a theme once copied can be edited and survives plugin upgrades)

          - Ships with a Skeleton template theme for custom theming

          - New themes will be added to 2.x, and all customers will receive these new themes to choose from, free of charge

          - Access to our Docs, Knowledge Base, and of course Support (we’re discontinuing free support for WPtouch 1.9)

… and more. There’s also a comparison chart on the Pricing tab on the product page.

          • Ok this is a bit clearer for me now. However i do have a small bit of advice. I would think twice about eliminating support for free items. Too many large companies do this and it’s nothing more or less than a sign of greed or weekness. A lot of people such as myself refuse to do business with anyone who tells people that they have to pay to talk to you about their products (free or not). A better idea would simply to provide limited support (meaning that support for paid items take priority). This is understandable by anyone. but to tell people “Here is something we made, if you need help then pay is” is about as low as the corporate world has ever become. I never could understand that. The free version is already a limited product… why not just provide limited support? I would never pay for something if I didn’t know what it was like dealing with the people who are selling it yet.

The support forums will still be open, and people can discuss and share information regarding WPtouch 1.9. The majority of the questions people have with it have already been answered, and they can find those answers already.

We can’t sell a ‘Support + Upgrade’ license for a product and then turn around and then offer free support for those who don’t pay.

Our customers can clearly see the level of detail, care, professionalism and quality that come with the work we do, be it paid or freely available. With over 850,000 downloads, the demand for free support on a free product was just too great for 2 guys to handle while they try and put food on the table.

And what would be the definition of ‘limited’? We might get back to you in a couple weeks? We’ll answer some questions, but not others? I don’t like ambiguity or unclear terms when it comes to things like this.

Lastly, the sense of entitlement that sometimes comes with free (as in price) freely available GPL projects is quite frankly, preposterous. Developers are not obligated to support free products, especially small companies like ours.

The free version of WPtouch has been around for 3 years, it doesn’t exist as a means to sell the Pro version, like many others have done. It wasn’t until early this year that we made the decision to create the Pro version, and we did so because we wanted to do so much more with it but had neither the financial means nor time to dedicate to it without offering it as a paid product.

We’re confident that our customers will be happy with it, our support, and what they get in terms of value for their money.

              • You basically already said it. limited support would simply be something like a forum where other users can assist each other and you guys can jump in now and then as needed. More advanced support would include that as well as direct contact and possible even live chat. People often seem out a more private assist because they may be working on something that they do not want the open public to be aware of. and, no, you shouldn’t feel obligated to answer questions for free products but like I said, a support forum where other users can communicate is still considered limited support. But when you said you were eliminating support, I had only to assume that the forum was part of that due to this being a method of support.

Ease up a bit John, these guys have provided their services for free to people like us for a long time, have a read up about them in other areas and see the huge input they have given the community. They have to draw the line somewhere and there are always those that want everything for nothing, without giving anything in return.
I think they are one of the best devs in the WordPress community and their record speaks for itself.
You only have to see how quick they are at responding to people to know they are excellent!
Good luck to them and others that charge for their work!
PS do you give your work away, do you have a plugin I could use?

              • What’s with the “ease up”? I’m asking professional questions here that are assisting me in deciding whether or not to include their product (free and paid) to my own clients. This is not a grudge trip.

No need for harshness at all, everyone. John’s asking questions, that’s what this thread is for.

                  Is everything answered, John?

  2. Congratulations Guys, it’s finally here, really pleased for you all, been watching your progress over some time and I’m impressed, keep up the good work!

  4. All set up and working great, just go to our site and check it out.

Thanks a lot for the fast support.

    5 Star weddings.

  5. Up to know I’m using the free version. I’m using Hypercache (can’t use SuperCache). My site has Safemode on. With the free version I have no problems.
Question 1: will it work with HyperCache?
Question 2: is it really necessary to have Safemode off?

    • Dale Mugford

      BNC Design Guru

      June 23rd, 2010

Should work fine with HyperCache. Safemode wasn’t a big deal in 1.9 because there wasn’t the need to be able to create directories in the same way that 2.0 does. If you’ll just be using our themes, it’s not an issue.

If you’ll want to create custom themes or edit themes, then it’ll be a nuisance for you because you won’t be able to do through the WordPress admin, and will have to upload/download them via FTP. If you don’t care about that then it’s no problem.

Congratulations on the offical release, Dale and Duane!

I have been using WPtouch 2.0 with the new WordPress 3.0, and everything is been working fine for me. I have not checked all the new features yet, but one thing I like very much is that v2.0 has resolved some small issues I was seeing here and there in v1.9.

I also have one question: Do beta licences work for v2.0 final or do I need to get a new licence?

    Cheers!

Hi Demetris, thanks! Yes, unless you want to wait for the beta of 2.1, which will start in 6-8wks or so.

Yeah- on BraveNewCode.com/support, you’ll find the download center in the sidebar. There’s always the latest release there.

  8. Hi

Hi, have installed 2.0 and all looks good. I do seem to have a problem with the save/share button. If the share/save is not in the centre of the screen then you cant see some of the functions as it seems to centre on the button rather than the screen it self. If you then wait a few secs, you can scroll up the overlay to see all functions.

Is it also possible to add your own function to this share/save button. Like mark a post as favourite?

I also seem to be having a bit of difficulty in registering 2.0, even when i put in my licence details it is still saying that it is unregistered

    Great job, thanks

    Thanks

    Mark

      Hi Mark,

These kinds of questions should be placed in our Support Forums. That way when we answer you others benefit from the response. That said, in short, the Share/Save will be improved over time, no doubt. As for your license, the combo is e-mail/password, the same ones you used when you purchased WPtouch Pro.

  9. This is truly so cool!!! Thanks for putting this out there!!!

i love WPtouch because it makes it easy to manage a website for mobile platforms such as the iPhone which happens to be my favorite mobile device in the world so to see how great and easy it is to manage my site with out knowing code, it just lifts the worry and work to make one. BraveNewCode is a great company because they work hard to make what they make and they take the time to do so. plus the way the site looks it just jaw dropping and a student studying web design it has inspired me. with the worlds easiest blog framewrok and the worlds best mobile site plugin combined it just makes making/managing a site fun thank you for a great plugin keep up the great work.
