Coming Soon to WPtouch: Push Notifications

WPtouch Push Notifications

Recently the Prowl application for iPhone was released, and with it came the possibility of bringing Growl notifications to WPtouch.

While certainly not complete and by no means tested thoroughly, in alpha testing is a new feature for WPtouch that enables website admins to have their WordPress website push Prowl notifications. In combination with Prowl, we’re testing the ability to have direct messages, new comments, new user registrations and posts by other users— all pushed as Prowl notifications on your Mac & iPhone.

There’s already a plugin called Prowl Me which allows users to send a direct message from your WordPress website to your iPhone, and we’ll build upon that allowing more happenings on your website to be sent to you, too.

So look for push notifications to be added to a WPtouch beta at some point over the coming weeks, and give it a try yourself!

I love your plugins so far. I’ve been trying to figure out how this works. How does the iPhone get connected to your Prowl account? Otherwise, I am looking forward to this addition.

@Saphrym: The WPtouch plugin will communicate directly with your Prowl account (after you enter your generated API key from Prowl). Then your WordPress install will push to prowl, and Prowl to Macs & iPhones. This is only an admin feature capability right now, not for visitors.

  4. Sounds awesome!
I love push notifications personally, they’re really convenient, and easy to find out if you got a new text/ IM, pretty much anything, apple should bring this feature to the mail app.

@Jordan Nehring: Yeah! for sure Jordan. We’ll hopefully add the feature in time for WPtouch 1.9, which should be in final RC status today as a final beta, then released shortly.

  6. This sounds so exciting. I hope you integrate prowl into WPtouch soon. Imagine the possibilities. Your not so specific as to whether it would only work when making a comment from the mobile site version or the regular version. Anyways cool.
